A Bid/No-Bid Checklist That Saves You Money
Chasing every opportunity is the fastest way to win nothing. A simple scoring sheet for deciding what deserves your time.
Every bid costs time, even the ones you lose. Smaller suppliers feel that cost most, which is why a quick, honest bid/no-bid decision is one of the most valuable habits a business can build.
Five questions to ask first
- Do we meet every mandatory requirement, including accreditations, insurances and turnover thresholds?
- Have we delivered something similar, recently, that we can evidence?
- Do we know the buyer, or can we show we understand their priorities?
- Can we price competitively without putting delivery at risk?
- Do we have the time and people to write a strong response before the deadline?
Score it, then decide
Give each question a score out of five. A low score on a mandatory requirement is an automatic no. A middling total is a signal to talk it through before committing, not to bid by default.
Walking away from the wrong tender frees your team to win the right one.
